Do You Have A Timber Flooring Project We Can Help With?

Barry from Bay Floor Sanding – will give you the best solution for your flooring needs.
Your first step is to shop around, do some research and find a type of wooden floor that is going to be the perfect fit for your home.
There are so many different styles of wooden floors, colours and options when it comes to laying a brand new floor down. Contact local businesses, visit show homes, or family or friends you may know who have recently had a new floor laid to get a good idea of what you like and what you think will fit well in your home. Always try to take into account colours you already have on your existing walls and try and match them up to compliment each other.
There is a huge variety of products and materials available on the market for you to consider when selecting your new floor, all options come each their own pros and cons. From laminate wood to hard wood, here are some guidelines to help steer you in the right direction.
Laminate/Engineered Wood
Laminate is one of the most popular flooring options.. Laminate floors are composed of different wood-based materials that are layered together then topped with a wood grain photographic imprint on the face of each board. Engineered wood consists of a real hardwood veneer attached to the wood-based layers, making it slightly more expensive than laminate. These flooring options are great for busy high traffic areas of the house.
PROS
- It is easier to install than solid-wood floors
- Is more cost effective
- Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is almost unaffected by dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has what is called in the industry a ‘wear layer’ which protects the photographic layer underneath.
- Comes in a range of colours and finishes
- Can be installed quickly
- Can be used immediately after installation
- Pre-finished means no smells from the coating applicant or hassles from sanding or polishing
- Easy on-going maintenance
CONS
- No matter how authentic looking laminate flooring may appear, nothing quite matches the feel and warmth of real authentic timber floors.
- If damaged, it can’t be sanded touched up
- Can be slippery when wet
Hardwood
Thanks to hardwood’s durability and warmth factor and natural feel, it continues to be one of the leading flooring options for many Hawke’s Bay homeowners. Timber floors are a durable option and the higher quality of the wood, the more durable the timber. When timber floors are looked after and cared for they can last for a long time. But like all flooring, it’s important to take good care of them!
PROS
- Hardwood comes in a variety of different shades, widths and finishes.
- Timber floors have a natural give which can help if you suffer from fatigue and joint pain.
- Timber flooring is warm under your feet so it’s perfect for cold winter nights.
- Timber floors have the appeal of an organic, natural material.
- Can be re-finished to come up as good as new.
- Greater life expectancy than laminate floors.
CONS
- Timber floors can be more expensive than laminate or other flooring options but are well worth the investment
- Darker woods do require more maintenance as dust, pet fur etc is more noticeable.

Timber Floor Laying & Processing
The flooring experts will come in and lay your new wooden floor. Again Barry has an extensive list of contacts and people he is happy to recommend to help guide you in the right direction. Once your new wooden floor has been installed, it is then time for Barry and his team at Bay Floor Sanding to enter the process.
Depending on your choice of wood and condition of the new floor Barry will proceed to assess what action needs to be taken. After careful consideration and assessment sometimes the wooden floor will require Barry to:
- Level out the timber
- Complete and spot filling that may be needed
- Continue to sand in more detail

Coating Systems Application
Once the floor has been prepared and fine tuned it’s time for the coating systems to be applied. We can apply from the following:
1. Moisture-cured polyurethane
- Generally a 3 coat system
- Either a gloss, satin, matt finish.
2. Water-Bourne polyurethane
- Low odour
- 3-4 coat system depending on what the type of timber it is.
- Water-bourne doesn’t have a high gloss as the above system.
- Generally satin, matt is used
3. Oiling
- This generally only has a 2-coat system, but again it comes down to what type of timber is down on the floor and depends on what type of brand of oil wanting to be used.
Once the polyurethane has been applied, everyone else must stay off the floor until advised. If you stand on the polyurethane that has not quite cured, you risk putting a footprint or dust in the floor. Even opening a door to see how things look can result in carpet dust and other dusts to travel onto the floor and create dust specs in the polyurethane.
We recommend that you find alternative accommodation (you may wish to also do this with the strong smell) or live within another area of the home as access to the floors will be restricted and the smell is very strong.
